Will Lagoon's Pioneer Village be history one day?

 




PIONEER Village has been a mainstay at Lagoon since 1976.
It is full of rare historical treasures that can't be duplicated, or copied.
Pioneer Village is all about the past and one day it will likely be just that, a vanished thing of the past.
The Village is also Lagoon Park's most costly maintenance nightmare. Plus, the rising generations do not seem to care about this historical treasure.
In fact, Pioneer Village resembles more of a ghost town these days, because of a lack of patrons.
There used to be fabulous old west gun battle shows in the Village and now they are long since gone, due to a lack of interest.
The only thing Pioneer Village is good for to most Lagoon goers these days is to be a travel path to the Log Flume and Rattlesnake Rapids rides.
With the oldest of Lagoon's owners, Peter Freed, gone, Pioneer Village could soon be in jeopardy of being closed, sold and moved away.
(Peter Freed passed away in 2020, at the age of 99.)
The rest of the Freed family doesn't appear to share Peter's fascination with history and the Village, according to inside sources.
So, enjoy Pioneer Village while you can...
My prediction is it will be closed and gone in less than 10 years ...
Pioneer Village was relocated from Salt Lake County in the mid-1970s. I don't see it being purchased by This is the Place Park in S.L.. Hopefully the LDS Church might see some interest in it.

LAGOON'S  wooden roller coaster is its second-oldest ride, behind the Carousel. The coaster, originally known as the "Dipper," opened in 1921. However, the Davis County Clipper newspaper of May 8, 1905, reported that the "dipper coaster" was to have arrived that spring. It was being promoted as "the only attraction of the kind west of Chicago." The wooden roller coaster didn't arrive for another 16 years, though. It was both costly and hard to obtain. The Clipper newspaper of May 27, 1921 stated that the "Lagoon Dipper" was now open. Its cost was $75,000 (almost $1 million in 2022 dollar value) and it was built by a Colorado Company. The 'Dark Side' of Lagoon Amusement Park

  By Lynn Arave Fatalities/Accidents at Lagoon:  There is one taboo subject at all amusement parks – fatalities and accidents. Accidents do happen -- nothing in life is totally safe. However, rest assured that statistically, you are far more likely to be injured, or killed in a car accident on the way to/or from Lagoon Amusement Park, Farmington, Utah, than on any of the park’s attractions.  With only 27 fatalities in the park’s long history, dating back to 1886, that isn’t a bad safety record at all. The park would prefer to have had no deaths, but then reading below, one can clearly conclude that most of the deaths at Lagoon were caused by a patron’s own negligence or recklessness. In others, riders "tested" their safety restraints, or even tried to exit the ride on their own.   THREE of the fatalities on rides -- the most of all -- are from the wooden Roller Coaster. Before Lagoon, there was Eden Park in Bountiful

    EDEN   PARK ,  in Bountiful, is the most forgotten Utah resort of the 19 th  Century. It was also the most short-lived recreational spot of its era, lasting just a single season. The first mention of Eden Park was in June of 1894. The Salt Lake Tribune of June 12, 1894 reported that a naming contest was held and “Eden Park” was chosen to be the new resort’s title. Constructed by Simon Bamberger, manager of the Great Salt Lake and Hot Springs Railroad (later simply called the Bamberger Railroad), “Bamberger’s Park” and such titles as “Bamdale” were also suggested for the resort’s name. Eden Park officially opened on June 16, 1894 and was designed to drive more traffic to Bamberger’s railroad, as it expanded northward. The Tribune of June 13, 1894 stated that music, dancing a bowery, refreshments and night-time illumination were the key features of the three-acre Eden Park.
